研究概要

「宇宙の中で生命を育んだ地球は,どれほどユニークな存在なのか」という根本的な問いかけに取り組むためには,天文学,惑星科学,地質学,生物学,化学という分野の垣根を超え,学際的な視点で物事を見る必要があります。我々は生命の起源に関する研究の経験はありません。にもかかわらず、この分野に挑戦することを選択したのは、新たな視点での学際研究に新機軸を見出したからです。それは、私たちが,生物系研究者の視点とは異なった、生命誕生場の環境復元に世界で一番詳しい位置にいるからです。研究は、(1)惑星系研究者(理論と惑星地質)が起源に携わり、(2)地球史研究者が最古地球の記録と隕石研究の背景から原始地球環境を復元し、(3)ゲノム生物学者が現世生物のゲノムから最古生物の代謝、膜、自己複製プログラムを推定することによって、実験生物学の一連の計画を練り、具体的実験を開始します。

生命と地球の歴史はこれまで何回か、著書という形式で纏められてきました。1970年代以前は、年代測定の不備と野外調査の方法論に問題を抱えていたために、神秘的な科学の時代にならざるを得ませんでした。精度の高い放射性年代学が確立し、プレート境界過程の研究が地質学に浸透すると、先カンブリア時代の研究が急激に加速し、生命と地球の歴史の研究は一変し、様々な視点と専門分野から著作がなされてきましたが、総合科学的視点でのまとめが試みられたことはありませんでした。

丸山を中心に、付加体地質学、放射性年代学―地球化学(SIMS + LA-ICP=MS)、古生物学、岩石学、古地磁気、地球物理学、惑星科学を組み合わせた総合研究が1990年から日本を中心に、世界25か国、約30研究機関の国際共同研究として始まり、最初の地球生命史が提唱されました(丸山・磯崎、1998)。その後、研究は20年以上続き現在に至り、その間、地球生命史モデルは幾らか改訂されてきました(Maruyama et all., 2002; 2008, 2013)。東工大を中心として進められてきたこのモデルの特徴は、固体地球と表層環境、更に生命進化がシステムとして同期して、カタストロフ的で一方向に向かう進化を起こしてきたことです。その一方向の進化の特異点を取り上げて「地球史7大事件」と呼びます。

次の課題は、宇宙変動と太陽の役割に焦点をあてて地球の起源と生命の誕生に取り組み、さらに原始大気と海洋の組成と量の進化と生命進化との関係を解明することです。これまで定量化できなかった「地球史7大事件」のシステム変動の定量化も課題のひとつです。

最終的なゴールは、地球―生命惑星学の体系化であり、宇宙でどのような初期条件が与えられると惑星の表面で生命が生まれ、更にどのような付帯的条件がそろうと大型生命へと進化し、脳が発達して、文明を持つ惑星が生まれるのか、その普遍的な条件を解明することが宇宙生物学のゴールです。
