The inaugural ELSI Summer School will be held August 2nd and 3rd in the ELSI building on the Tokyo Tech campus to provide hands-on tutorials of computational tools related to planetary formation and Early Earth evolution.

Eric Heien [Aspect]
ASPECT: Advanced Solver for Problems in Earth's ConvecTion

ASPECT is a finite element parallel code to simulate problems in thermal convection using either 2D or 3D models with a primary focus on the simulation of processes in the earth's mantle.

AxiSEM: Axisymmetric Spectral-Element Method

AxiSEM is a parallel spectral-element method for 3D (an-)elastic, anisotropic and acoustic wave propagation in spherical domains. It requires axisymmetric background models and runs within a 2D computational domain, thereby reaching all desired highest observable frequencies (up to 2Hz) in global seismology. The Fortran2003 (OpenMP, MPI) code scales very well on supercomputers and is available from axisem.info under the GPL license.
Takayuki Saitoh[SPH]
SPH: Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics

The code used in my lecture is a subset of my simulation code ASURA which has been developed for galaxy formation simulation. This code uses the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method in order to solve the evolution of compressible fluid. Several standard benchmark tests (e.g., shocktube, Kelvin-Helmholtz instablity) are included in the code so that you can learn the capability of the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method.
Koichiro Umemoto [First-Principles Molecular Dynamics]
Quantum-ESPRESSO
Presenter: Koichiro Umemoto, ELSI, Tokyo Tech
An open-source package for first-principles electronic structure calculations. It can be performed on many platforms. It is available at http://www.quantum-espresso.org/. You can find a detailed install instruction athttp://www.quantum-espresso.org/wp-content/uploads/Doc/user_guide/node7.html.
We will aim for studying how to use Quantum-ESPRESSO to calculate free energy for simple mineral, e.g. MgO. The method we will learn can be applied readily to other serious minerals.

The morning of August 2nd the tutorial leaders will discuss the theoretical grounding of their respective codes followed by the first hands-on tutorial session during the afternoon. The second tutorial session will take place the morning of August 3rd. The goal for each 3-hour tutorial is that participants get the code working on their laptop, run test cases that demonstrate how to use the parameter files, and run cases that demonstrate the code's usefulness for each participant's desired scientific inquiry. Although participants will choose two tutorials, they will go home with the codes and instructional materials for all of the tutorials offered. After each tutorial we will briefly gather and share our results. After lunch on Sunday, participants who will be attending the SEDI meeting will be transported to Shonan Village.

Travel
ELSI will...
- cover flights to/from Tokyo for tutorial leaders.
- provide lodging at a nearby hotel for the nights of August 1st and 2nd for all participants.
- provide breakfast and coffee on August 2nd and 3rd.
ANA Airlines offers big discounts for foreigners flying domestically within Japan, often as much as 1/2 the regular price. Please use this discount if you are traveling to/from the Summer School from within Japan, for example if you are coming to the Tokyo area from the AOGS meeting in Sapporo.

There is no registration fee and lodging is provided, so participants will only cover their local meals and transportation. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide travel grants for students.
