One of the most fascinating topics in the earth and space sciences is the
question of the existence of life on other planets in particular on Mars.
Methane plays a key role as a proof of microbial life on Mars. However, methane
on Mars by itself is not a proof for life processes. On Earth methane is also
produced in ophiolites through abiotic processes of the Fischer-Tropsch type.
Ophiolitic terrains exist on Mars and are potential sources of abiotic methane
without living organisms. The key to differentiating these origins are carbon
isotope analyses. I will discuss proposals how ELSI could engage in this
fascinating research area.
