New stable isotope techniques and applications to early Earth and life studies

Date
June 25, 2016

PreGoldschmidt03.jpg
Pre-Goldschmidt workshop, Saturday June 25, 2016
Earth-Life Science Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo
Supported by the Earth-Life Science Institute and Thermo Fisher Scientific

Theme
The bulk analysis of stable isotopes of light elements has long been used to study the origin and evolution of the Earth and Life. Today, new technological and conceptual developments have opened new analytical possibilities: mass-independent fractionation, position-specific and clumped isotopic substitutions can be measured. In this workshop, we will focus on presenting state of the art techniques, applied to geochemistry and biology. We will also present the facilities at the Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) of the Tokyo Institute of Technology.
All speakers are invited, poster presentations are available.

Program (near final)
John Eiler - Caltech, USA. Fourier transform mass spectrometry as a path to routine analysis of molecular isotopic structures
Shuhei Ono - MIT, USA. Topic: Clumped isotopes
Jeemin Rhim - MIT, USA. Topic: Clumped 13C-D in methanogenesis
Shawn McGlynn - ELSI, Tokyo, Japan and BMSIS. Analyzing microbial individuals and populations with SIMS: culture dependent and independent approaches.
Gerald Remaud - U of Nantes, France. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometry for position-specific isotope analysis
Alexis Gilbert - ELSI, Tokyo, Japan. On-line pyrolysis coupled to IRMS for intramolecular isotope determination
Richard Robins - U of Nantes, France. Position-Specific Isotope Analysis - a retro-biosynthetic approach to elucidate and predict biosynthetic pathways.
Aubrey Zerkle -U of St Andrews, UK. Topic: Multiple isotopes of sulfur and biogeochemical cycling
Jill McDermott - U of Toronto, Canada. Application of isotopic techniques to reveal the biogenic and abiogenic origins of organic compounds in submarine hydrothermal vents
Andreas Hilkert - Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bremen, Germany. Extending the boundaries of isotope ratio MS - Latest technological improvements
