Oct. 15-18 Workshop on Transport Properties in the Earth's Core

Date
October 15, 2013 - June 18, 2014

General Information:

The Earth-Life Science Institute (ELSI) is pleased to announce a Workshop on Transport Properties in the Earth's Core to be held 15-18 October 2013 at Kawaguchiko Lake (at the foot of Mt. Fuji, a World Heritage Site). This workshop will be modeled on a previous workshop held in October 2008, on Transport Properties in the Earth's Lower Mantle.

Our motivation for hosting a workshop specifically on transport properties in the core stems primarily from recent upward revisions in estimates of core conductivity, which carries important implications for the dynamics and evolution of the deep Earth. The new conductivity estimates are derived from both numerical and experimental techniques, however, in detail there are still many differences between the findings of various groups. Our goal is to bring together key researchers to discuss both the differences in our results, and to consider together the robustness of upward revisions in core conductivity in the context of their implications for the dynamics of the core and evolution of the deep Earth system. We will compose a special volume following the workshop (likely for PEPI).

Venue:

Wakakusa no Yado Maruei, a hotel onsen located at Kawaguchiko Lake, at the foot of Mt. Fuji. See the following web page for more details:

http://www.japanican.com/hotels/ShisetsuDetail.aspx?st=4258004

Onsen hotel rooms will be shared, 4 people in each room. Food will be Japanese, vegetarian options are available upon request in advance. Please contact us if you have any particular rooming preferences.

October climate at Lake Kawaguchiko is moderately cool, with an average temperature near 12˚C, and typical high/low of 17˚C/7˚C. Elevation is 860 m, and rain falls in about a third of the days in October.

Registration fee:

JPY41,400, which includes accommodation, meals, and coffee at the venue, in addition to ground transportation to/from the airport hotel. Please consult with us if you plan to attend only a portion of the workshop.

NOTE: All attendees must pay this fee directly to the hotel upon arrival, as it is the payment for your room. The hotel accepts cash and credit card.

Presentation Titles/Abstracts:

We will contact you directly regarding presentations and scheduling. There will be a poster session on Thursday night, if you wish to bring a poster please contact us so that we can ensure there will be sufficient space.

Lodging and Transport to/from Narita Airport:

Our chartered bus to the meeting venue will start from, and return to, the Narita Excel Hotel Tokyu, next to Narita Airport. The bus will depart at 9:00AM, please arrive early to avoid delays. If you wish, we can reserve a hotel room at the Narita Excel Hotel Tokyu on the nights of the 14th and/or 18th of October, but you must RSVP in advance so that we can reserve a sufficient number of rooms. The cost is ~JPY9,000 per person per night, breakfast included. Please note: payment is to be made to ELSI staff by cash upon arrival of the workshop venue.

The shuttle bus will also stop near Tokyo Tech in each direction. The bus will depart at 11:00AM, please arrive before 10:45AM to avoid delays. The location of the stop is Building W9 on the Ookayama campus of the Tokyo Institute of Technology, click here for a map of the shuttle stop location.
